Il presente lavoro analizza l'esperienza di quattro giovani imprenditori, che alla guida della propria impresa di famiglia, hanno contribuito a determinare l'approccio delle medesime all'innovazione, in particolare quella collaborativa (Open Innovation: OI). Quattro sono le aree concettuali investigate(governance, contesto di business e risorse; fattori familiari – obiettivi non economici e/o atteggiamenti socio-emozionali; determinanti dell'innovazione; dimensioni dell'innovazione) al fine di esaminare le relazioni fra di esse e di spiegare come il giovane imprenditore abbia contribuito alle scelte di innovazione della propria azienda. I risultati dello studio evidenziano che i quattro giovani imprenditori sono animati da propri obiettivi non economici e/o atteggiamenti socio-emozionaliche li differenziano da quelli dei propri predecessori, e che tali obiettivi e/o atteggiamenti consentono loro di attivare una serie di leve manageriali in grado di stimolare l'OI e l'innovazione in senso lato.

Il presente studio si focalizza sulle imprese familiari e nello specifico sul ruolo del Giovane Imprenditore, ovvero colui/colei che, inserito nella propria azienda di famiglia con ruoli e responsabilità crescenti, è destinato presumibilmente nel breve ter mine ad assumerne l a guida. Il framework di riferimento è quello della teoria della Socio - Emotional Wealth , la quale i dentifica una serie di obiettivi non economici e atteggiamenti socio - emozionali dei leader familiari che rendono peculiari le aziende stesse, distinguendole da quelle non familiari. Coerentemente è stato sviluppato un questionario a risposte chiuse indirizzato sia alla generazione entrante sia alla generazione uscente, con l'obiettivo di esplor are tali peculiarità. L'evidenza raccolta delinea il Giovane Imprenditore come un soggetto che, pur nel rispetto della tradizione, è in grado di favorire l'innovazione e l'internazionalizzazione, intese quali fondamentali performance aziendali.

We suppose that the heterogeneous innovative behavior of family firms can be explained by a different salience of socio-emotional wealth factors (SEW), characterizing young family managers with respect to senior ones. Based on this argument, the paper investigates whether some SEW factors are conceived in a different manner by junior and senior generations within the same family firm; and whether such an eventual evolution is related to the firm’ s willingness to innovate. We carry out a quantitative study in a research setting in which the renewal of the leadership is in progress. Results show that some differences in SEW factors exist: young family leaders show a lower emotional attachment as well as a lower renewal of family bonds through generations. Moreover, these factors are related to the willingness to innovate. Lastly, senior generations, still co-involved in the management, exert a moderating action in a likely complex interplay.

Although measuring the performance of a firm’s R&D activities is a very challenging task, the critical role played by R&D in creating and sustaining a firm’s competitive advantage has raised the need to adopt appropriate Performance Measurement Systems (PMSs) in R&D units. Therefore, management scholars have been studying this issue and PMSs have diffused in the R&D departments of most R&D-intensive companies. Nevertheless, empirical investigations into the diffusion and practical use of PMSs in R&D units mainly concern Anglo-Saxon countries, where R&D information disclosure requirements have been in place for a long time. The purpose of this paper is to study the diffusion and practical use of PMSs in the R&D units of firms that are not subject to these types of external institutional influences. With this aim, the results of a survey on the R&D performance measurement practices adopted by a sample of Italian R&D-intensive firms are discussed. They allow to understand why and how R&D-intensive companies design and use a PMS in their R&D units for managerial purposes.
