The literature on cultural districts is still in its infancy, even if several analytical views and schools of thought are identifiable. The present paper aims at critically reviewing the scientific debate around the concept of cultural district - with a focus on the contributions by Italian scholars - in order to stress commonalities and differences with the world-known concept of industrial district, which inspired the idea of the cultural district itself.
