Cross-border commuters: how to segment them? A framework of analysis
Published 2020

The removal of barriers to labour mobility and the enhancement of cross-border mobility are expected to reduce regional disparities by contributing to a more efficient allocation of labour. For some time now, however, researchers have considered borders and cross-border regions to be marginal zones. Therefore, we contribute to the discussion by providing a qualitative framework for the segmentation of the cross-border job market, capable of addressing some questions relevant to the management of cross-border commuting regarding the nature of imbalances that characterize the cross-border job market and the main factors underpinning the phenomenon. To do so, we focused specifically on the Euroregion "Regio Insubrica", a cross-boundary cooperation community between Italy and Switzerland. Nevertheless, the proposed framework may be easily applied to all the existing cross-border regions across the world in order to help explain the imbalances that exist, and support decision-makers regarding educational and labour market policies.

Despite scholars have given much attention to research on managerial behaviours, the results have not been always consistent till today, heading thus in multiple directions. Previous studies on this area have generally adopted the point of view of managers, thus partially neglecting the perspective of their employees, who are among their most important stakeholders. In the attempt to enrich this strand of literature, in this study we aim at identifying which are the managerial behaviours that bring employees to recommend their manager as someone they should work for in the future. This is done by collecting data gathered from an online survey answered by 461 Italian employees.

Big data analytics for forecasting tourists' arrivals: the Lombardy case

Internet searches and query data have become favorable sources for better forecasts of tourist volumes (Pan et al., 2012; Yang et al., 2014; Yang et al., 2015): search engines are used to plan routes, search for hotels, attractions, travel guides and reviews (Fesenmaier et al., 2011). Thanks to "hybrid models", i.e. the fusion of classical econometric methodologies and machine learning (Makridakis et al., 2018), it is possible to exploit such "big data" to obtain a forecasting performance superior to that of standard models (Li et al., 2017). By proposing an innovative modelling framework, we develop a hybrid model for the Lombardy tourism market, to verify the reliability of the ambitious target of becoming one of the most visited regions in Europe. We find mixed results for the Lombardy provinces, calling for a more refined and micro-founded tourism planning strategy. Furthermore, our framework is easily extendable with other countries and/or research areas, thus providing a valuable tool for assessing such issues.

Adattarsi per resiliere: nuovi approcci metodologici ed evidenze empiriche micro territoriali
Published 2016
, 1 - 48
The paper focuses on the regional economic resilience and, in particular, on its adaptive interpretation, which defines it as the property of a territorial system to react and to adapt to endogenous and exogenous disturbances, in order to achieve a new balance that makes it more prepared to deal with future changes in context. Empirically the paper aims to explore and classify the determinants of resilience in an innovative way and to build resilience indices of micro-territories during the period of the economic crisis, in order to ascertain the existence of differences between the resilience municipalities in Lombardy and, therefore, confirm the importance of resilience even in micro contexts. To evaluate the role played by the adaptive capacity in influencing regional resilience,”Indicators of Adaptation” were built, to verify the importance exercised by the flexibility and adaptability of the territories to determine their resilience. The analysis at the micro-regional level showed that Lombardy and its municipalities have exhibited resilience items during the economic crisis and that this property is crucial to enhance the economic development of micro-territories. Therefore, governments and policymakers should pay attention to the regional resilience, in order to undertake new paths of growth and renewal.
