Abstract
In dynamic contexts, where work practices and information systems (IS) are constantly misaligned, research into the psychological aspects of IS use is increasingly relevant. This article considers the impacts of techno-uncertainty, a key technostress factor, on the use of healthcare information systems (HIS). The proposed serial mediation model of the impact of techno-uncertainty on HIS suggests that the effect unfolds through perceived usefulness and exploitative use. Tests of mediation among 301 caregivers provide support for these predictions. To help healthcare institutions enhance their HIS uses, this study opens the black box of mechanisms by which techno-uncertainty determines HIS exploratory use, including the role of experience with appraising system characteristics. It also highlights potentially positive effects of technostress, indicating the need to study distinct techno-stres-sors in specific contexts.
