Abstract

Tourist behavior Nudging Systematic literature network analysis Sustainable tourism Tourist decision-making
As interest in sustainable and responsible tourism grows, it becomes increasingly important to understand how to alter tourists’ choice architecture or nudge tourists’ decision-making toward optimal choices and sustainable practices. However, while tourist behavior has been widely examined in other disciplines, the nudging mechanism has been largely overlooked in the tourism behavior literature. To address this gap, the present study aims to map the research landscape and intellectual structure of the nudging perspective in tourist behavior, utilizing Systematic Literature Network Analysis (SLNA) methodology, a mix of systematic literature review and bibliographic network analysis. A specific set of inclusion, exclusion, and extraction criteria was applied to identify and examine papers in the fields of tourist behavior and nudging. A total of 185 publications were analyzed: using tools such as VOSviewer, Pajek, and the Bibliometrix R package, we conducted a series of analyses, including the study main path, citation network, global citation score, author keyword network, word trend, and thematic mapping to uncover the current and future research agenda. The findings reveal three major themes: (i) behavioral intervention and behavior change, (ii) decision-making and choice architecture, and (iii) sustainable tourism consumption behavior. The results highlight the growing attention to the application of behavioral economics in tourism behavior, the role of cognitive biases in promoting the optimal choices in promoting optimal choices, the use of intelligent systems such as chatbots, and nudging techniques scaling on digital contexts.
