Abstract: This study employs a network approach to investigate the exchange of different types of knowledge in regional clusters; its purpose is to contribute to the academic debate on innovation networks and regional clusters. Specifically the research develops a deep understanding of the nature and properties of networks resulting from the exchange of different types of knowledge. Furthermore it identifies the specific roles played by different organisations in such networks. Both structural properties and actor-based measures are developed through the application of Social Network Analysis techniques on data collected in two Italian aerospace clusters. Networks resulting from the exchange of technological, market and managerial knowledge are compared and a multi-actor approach, capable of capturing the roles of large firms, SMEs, research organisations and public institutions is employed. The study has clear implications both in terms of theory development as well as for managerial and policy decision-making. Furthermore, by introducing network measures rarely used in this academic area, the research offers a methodological contribution to the study of clusters and innovation.
